UPDATE 12/24/22:
Last price drop in effect. Pricetronic fees are still bonkers, and I will likely be pursuing another avenue for selling this thing if it doesn't move soon. You probably won't find one in working order for less.
While best offer is still on, please understand that functional/semi-functional/loaded units still command $2K+
I know that shipping is expensive, and I apologize that this is the case. Sony and several other third-party vendors still service these. Buy with confidence; this is a professional-owned unit with professional miles on it, there's plenty of life left if it's taken care of.
There's a lot to cover here, so I'll give a brief synopsis. I am more than willing to provide serious buyers with additional information, photos, videos, demos, etc.
This is a massive piece of professional video production gear, if you're looking at this listing - you likely know what you're getting here.
This was owned by one production company since it was purchased in 1988. I have full documentation and service notes for the period of time when it was in use. It remained in one location for the majority of its life, temperature-controlled professional workplace. Smoke-free, pet-free, child-free. Owned and operated by professionals.
All of the original paperwork and schematics/service notes are here.
I do not have any spare/empty tapes for this unit. You will need D-2 Master videocassette tapes for operation.
There isn't much more for me to add as a preface. If you are serious about acquiring this unit, I am easy to coordinate with; please feel free to reach out. I would love to see the unit get back into a working environment and I am willing to do everything I can to accommodate the right buyer.
However, I was not the operator of this unit and probably wouldn't be the best source for technical information.
I reset the OS to factory settings and read out the various diagnostic menus. If you need specific details beyond what this listing has provided, please reach out.
Here's the general details --
  • I am selling this one at a discounted rate due to an issue with what I assume to be the drum assembly or a pinch roller. I only have one of these D2 tapes on hand, so it could be an issue with my tape as well.
  •  I don't have the time to go through the manuals and diagnose the issue any further, but I've been advised that it can be fixed rather easily.
  • There are still technicians that work on these and there are numerous outlets for acquiring replacement parts/components or even aftermarket parts.
  • Since all of these resources still exist and since I'm providing you with every speck of paperwork on the unit, I know that this issue can be resolved with some focus and effort. Unfortunatley, that focus and effort will be yours and not mine. I've included an image of the display message when the tape is inserted. It notes that the unit is stuck in step B
  • It's also worth noting that the tape door is stuck in the up position and I have no clue as to why or how.
  • Once again, selling at a discounted rate because I don't have the technical expertise or time to figure it out myself.

  • All of that out of the way, this unit is in very good shape - given its age and relative size. A lot could've gone wrong over the years, but it still boots up and runs as intended (aside from the issue running the master tape, as already described)
It will come with the massive stack of paperwork/binders/manuals, a standard IEC power cable, and one of those super-long 'parallel I/O' Sony cables (I think that's what it is)
I can also throw in any number of used BNC cables at your request
Long story short; this thing is massive. Roughly 27x21x16" with everything packed in.
I strongly doubt that this can be safely and effectively shipped to other countries (I'm leaving the option there -- but anywhere outside of the CONUS and you might as well be flying it first class). As for CONUS; it'll likely be in the neighborhood of standard freight-rates if you want it in one piece. I've extended the handling time so that I can get some form of a crate built for shipping it, as it will likely tear through any/all cardboard boxes. It will take me several days to get this gathered and packed properly, please do not order if you are incapable of patience.
Even if you wish to pick this unit up - it'll be a couple days until I can get it loaded and ready for a meet-up. I will not leave the state for a local pickup option, but will meet-up anywhere in Ohio if you don't haggle. Bear in mind that I do not have the organizational capacity of a traditional retailer and the labor/time involved in transporting this to a buyer will be out of my pocket. I am more than willing to work with you on shipping/pickup -- but I am only one man here.
It's roughly 120 pounds when packaged with the manuals and cables. I hope that I don't need to explain much more about the matter in regard to shipping costs. I cannot make it weigh less and I cannot adjust the calculated shipping rate. These are the correct dimensions -- if anything, they are a very lean estimate. If it costs more for me to ship this than you paid for; I'll cover it. If it costs less than you paid, I'll refund the difference.
I'm not going to add in every little detail and element -- if you want/need one of these units, you likely have some level of experience or knowledge.
I've included an image of the diagnostic page -- reading out at just over 20k operation hours. I don't know if this is accurate or not, since it hasn't been fired up in over a decade. From what I've found, this is about the average for these units -- it might sound like a lot, but not in comparison with other heavily used units. You never find these with the original paperwork -- there's documentation here for every revision/update that the unit received in addition to the original paperwork/manuals.
It's about 10 pounds of manuals and assorted documentation. The original manual is in a hard-shell binder
The only other NTSC model that I found for sale online was from the broadcast store web-shop. They were asking about 4 grand for a used model last time I checked.
I believe that this one came from either BCS or Midwest at some point in the 90's. The receipt is gone at this point, though.
    Purchased new, sometime around 1988.
It was an integral part of a now-defunct production company -- always used in a professional environment, remans in 'professional-condition' even though it's pre-owned
That being said, my asking price isn't a reflection of comparable scrapped units. I know that this unit was maintained and serviced regularly. Furthermore, I know that it received almost every upgrade that was available for these units. It is serviceable and includes every ounce of information to get it running smoothly once again. I know that there's even a couple aftermarket part manufacturers still producing replacement parts for these.
Once again, please reach out with any questions/concerns -- I'm sure we can get something worked out.
