FRANK ZAPPA "LUMPY GRAVY"(UK BLACK VERVE) 1968 EX GATEFOLD NICE DISC IS HEAVY AND EX ALSO This is what John Lennon was after with Revolution #9. But where John failed, Frank succeeded. This is one of the more palatable examples of Musique Concrete that you'll ever hear. And while my taste for the genre doesn't extend out very far from Germany, this is to my ears, the real deal. Frank takes bits and pieces from just about everywhere, (Frank always had a tape recorder on him) and strings it together with musical connectors that range for the silly, to the absolutely sublime. Indeed, Frank was first and foremost a composer. A goddamn SERIOUS composer. And what this piece, because, that's really what it is, which is why I prefer listening uninterrupted on CD, is a combination of excellent composition and, remember this was 1968, even great 8 track studio wizardry. It's not for everybody, but everybody should give it a try.
