Ampex 601 Reel To Reel Preamp Tape Recorder

Ampex 601 reel to reel preamp tape recorder. Comes with mic input transformer. Preamp modified for 3 prong power cable. Also modified for 5879 tubes instead of 6267 tubes (5879s were used in the 600s and early 601s but I believe this to be a later 601) Apparently the preamp was built and owned by an ex ampex employee. Unit powers on, preamp passes signal, but signal is distorted. Tape transport is from an earlier 601 and does not play, although it seems to fast forward and reverse. I wish I was better at fixing these things but I am not. No front lid. Sold as is no returns. I am willing to sell just the preamp for $350 + $50 shipping. (Edit: It has come to my attention that the output transformer might not be original. I can not confirm this, please look at the pictures and make your own decision)
