24-Track Woelke Erase Head - Otari MTR-24 MCI JH (?) or Upgrade for Ampex MM1100, MM1200 EXC+ **Please note: The photographs showing Ampex MM1200 and MM1000 head assemblies utilizing Woelke erase heads are for _ illustration only _. The Ampex head assemblies shown are NOT part of this auction. ** This auction is for a Woelke 24-track erase head in excellent condition. If you own an Otari MTR multitrack, you know what this is. If you need one, here it is. Check with JRF to see if it's compatible with your MCI 24-track. I think it is, but check first. If you own an Otari or MCI 24-track machine, you can skip over the Ampex info right to the bottom of this description. For Ampex multitrack owners: Woelke erase heads are a terrific upgrade. They erase *significantly deeper* than the erase heads used by Ampex in their multitrack tape machines. Unlike an Ampex erase head, Woelke erase gaps overlap the guard bands between tracks so no residual audio remains to bleed back into the newly recorded tracks. In fact, erasing a 24-track tape with a Woelke erase head is like wiping the tape with a 2" mono erase head. Also, unlike Ampex erase heads, Woelke erase heads don't burn out on a regular basis. Ampex MM1100s and MM1200s are notorious for burning out tracks on their stock erase heads. Woelke erase heads actually erase deeper with *less* power from the erase circuit and are therefore far more reliable. Installing the head into an Ampex tape machine is a modification and requires fabrication of a custom base for the head. JRF can handle this and the installation into your head assembly. If you purchase the head, I will forward you a guide to performing the relatively simple modifications to the erase cards. Modifying your Ampex 24-track MM to use this Woelke erase head will require some additional investment beyond buying the head. You will need to have the head installed into your machine's head assembly and you'll need to purchase a few parts for each erase card. If you don't solder, you 'll need help getting the erase cards modified. The procedure also requires retuning the erase coils on the erase card. That might sound daunting, but if you are able to align your machine, it's just one more step and only has to be done once. There! Now there will be no surprises. After all, I want you to have a successful experience with modifying your beloved Ampex multitrack. I've modified (3) MM1200s (8-16-24-track machines) and an MM1000-16 to use Woelke erase heads and have been very pleased with the results. I'm sure you will be too. I will pack the head well to ensure safe arrival. I'll also provide contact info so you or your tech can get in touch if you need help. See my feedback and bid with confidence! Note: This auction is for continental USA only. Check my feedback and bid with confidence. Thanks and have a great day!
