Charles Morati
30 June 1875 Alger – 1956 Buffalo?
Picture of Charles Morati
A French record dealer once spread the rumour that Morati died during the First World War as the singer had disappeared from view in France.
He could not have been more wrong. Morati stayed in the US. He seems to have settled in Buffalo, New York. On January 14th, 1914, he declared his intention to become a US citizen. On April 14th, 1917, he petitioned to become a US citizen. He finally became one on July 17th, 1917.
At that time he seems to have given mostly concerts.
In The papers of Will Rogers: From vaudeville to Broadway, he is described as a member of a Basque Grand Opera Quartet.
In 1914, he was taking part in a concert in Buffalo (Buffalo NY Courier 1914).
In 1918, he was venturing into vaudeville (The Telegram, April 7th, 1918).
Same thing in Oregon (The Sunday Oregonian, September 1st, 1918); and in San Antonio (San Antonio Evening News, January 11th, 1919): "Lovers of music will visit their mecca during the coming week as Charles Morati, the celebrated French tenor, will let forth his golden notes during the course of an act called Art and stupidity."
In 1942, we find him working in a plane factory to fight the Germans (The Courier-Mail Saturday 13 June 1942). Emerson Records was an American record company and label created by Victor Emerson in 1915. Victor Hugo Emerson was the chief recording engineer at Columbia Records. In 1914 he left the company, created the Emerson Phonograph Company, and then Emerson Records the following year.[1] He began producing small records, 5-inch discs that sold for 10 cents and 7-inch discs that sold for 25 cents. Early discs consisted of popular tunes, dance numbers, and patriotic marches, recorded by musicians in New York City who were credited as the "Emerson Orchestra" or sometimes "The Emerson Symphony Orchestra". Classical records were made by violinist David Hochstein (his only recordings), pianist Arthur Friedheim, and the orchestra of New York's Rialto Theatre under its director Hugo Riesenfeld. In January 1918 Emerson added a line of 9-inch records that sold for 75 cents. After World War I, Emerson began an ambitious expansion of the business, and in 1919 added a line of industry standard 10-inch discs for 85 cents and increased to one dollar the following year. In 1919 Emerson introduced 12-inch discs, mostly of classical music, for US$1.25. The label's catalog included recordings by Wilbur Sweatman, Eddie Cantor, the Six Brown Brothers, the Louisiana Five, Lizzie Miles, Eubie Blake, Fletcher Henderson, the Original Memphis Five, John W. Myers, Henry Burr and the Peerless Quartet, Billy Golden, Collins & Harlan, Sally Hamlin, Dan W. Quinn, Sam Ash, Vernon Dalhart, Van and Schenck, Ada Jones, and Homer Rodeheaver. If for any reason your transaction was NOT SATISFACTORY, pls contact me and I will work something out with you. YOU WILL NEVER HAVE A REASON TO GIVE ME A NEGATIVE RATING or a LOW STAR RATING. Quick note on grading: The Grade (Excellent to Poor, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to P), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise. "SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing. "VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing. "Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a give pressing. These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment. Multiple item shipping: I am happy to combine items for shipment in one parcel. If you win multiple items, pls send me an INVOICE REQUEST to calculate the correct postage. Ebay check out will not give you the correct multiple item discount! Records will be packed safely between corrugated cardboard in a sturdy box with plenty of padding for safe shipment. Up to about 5 records, I will ship Edison Discs for the same rates. Albums from Album Sets count as 1 record. Above that and for international shipments, it will be actual weight plus a small packing charge (1-3$ depending on size of shipment) 1 record: 4.99 – 5.85$ 2 records: 6.95$ 5 records: 8.50$ 10 records: 12.00$ MANY MORE RECORDS: Don't worry.
